Travel with us to Winchester, an unspoilt cathedral city on the edge of the South Downs. Winchester is England's ancient capital and former seat of King Alfred the Great. Explore the beautiful countryside that inspired Jane Austen with a railway journey and canal cruise plus a visit to the charming medieval city of Salisbury in this comprehensive tour.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Travel to your hotel with a stop in Banbury en-route.
Day 2: This morning is free to enjoy the various attractions that Winchester has to offer such as: The Great Hall which houses the Round Table, the City Museum and of course the famous Cathedral. This afternoon travel to Alton to join the Mid Hants Watercress Line Railway for the 10 mile journey to Alresford. The beautiful Georgian town of Alresford which was once a prosperous wool town, is now home to numerous specialist antique and gift shops.
Day 3: Travel to the Basingstoke Canal visitor centre for a cruise along the canal. Enjoy a complimentary cup of tea whilst watching the colourful traditional canal boats. Afterwards, we visit Basildon Park. This 18th century Palladian mansion was saved from ruin in the 1950s and is famous for its fine collection of paintings, textiles and furniture.
Day 4: Excursion across the border into Wiltshire for a visit to the medieval city of Salisbury.
Day 5: Homeward journey with a stop in Oxford en-route.
