In the Bavarian Alps of Southern Germany the popular tourist town of Oberammergau has been famous as a woodcarving centre since the 12th century and is also noted for the town's passion play, performed every 10 years. The history of the world-famous Passion Play in Oberammergau dates back to 1634 in the middle of the 30 years War. After months of suffering and dying from the 'Black Death', or plague, surviving villagers swore an oath to perform a 'Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Christ' every 10 years. The play, originally made up of just actors from the village itself, has grown to a stage production comprising almost 2000 performers, singers, musicians and stage technicians. The play is performed in the 5000 seat Passion Play Theatre with its open air stage. Our itinerary combines the fascinating Oberammergau Passion Play experience with a stay in 4* accommodation in the Austrian Tyrol.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival and transfer to the Tyrol for a 5 night stay at the 4* Bruckenwirt Hotel in St. Johann (or similar).
Day 2: Full day excursion to the Ziller Valley, taking the Ziller Valley steam train to Mayrhofen. Optional Tyrolean Evening.
Day 3: Excursion to Salzburg with half-day guided tour including Mozart's birth place.
Afternoon boat trip on River Salzach.
Day 4: Full day excursion to Lake Achensee including ride on Achensee Steam Train and cruise on Lake Achensee. Optional dinner show, The Sound of Austria featuring, The Sound of Music.
Day 5: Journey on the Gisela train to Zell am See.
Day 6: Departure for Oberammergau.
Day 7: Individual visit to the Passion Museum followed by lunch and the Oberammergau Passion Play performance with dinner in interval.
Day 8: Transfer to airport.
